“Brain Drain” in the Ghanaian fashion market

The issue of “Brain Drain” in the Ghanaian fashion market is one worth taking a critical look at. It has been believed that designers who have studied abroad have more opportunities for growth as compared to homegrown designers.

This notion is, however, changing as we have in recent times seen talents trained right here in Ghana who are making a great impact globally.

Brain Drain will be thoroughly looked at and discussed at the 6th quarterly fashion talk series organized by Fashion Forum Ghana, a subsidiary of Fashion Forum Africa (FFA).

The event which will take place on Thursday 1st June 2017 at the British Council Accra from 5:00pm to 8pm will highlight and discuss how fashion institutions in Ghana are training new talents and their support in raising the profile of Ghanaian designers globally and also look at the possibility of averting the issue of brain drain.

The talk series will bring together various stakeholders within fashion education in Ghana who will share more insights on how we can promote our institutions and the talents that we produce in Ghana and West Africa.

The panel discussion which will be moderated by Ivy Prosper, will feature seasoned heads of various leading fashion institutions in Ghana such as Dr. Ebenezer Kofi Howard from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology – KNUST, Mrs. Vivian Biney-Aidoo of Accra Technical University Department of Fashion, Mrs. Fabiola Opare-Darko of Joyce Ababio College of Creative Design – JACCD, Mrs. Yvonne Ntiamoah of Radford University College and Mr. Rajesh Kumar Pillai of Blue Crest School of Fashion & Design.

This discussion will also bring to bear the talents within the fashion institutions and how these institutions are helping to shape and maintain such talents within the Ghanaian fashion market.

There will also be special presentations from training institutions such as Sleek Fashion Institute of Technology & Creativity by Nora Bannerman, Adzedu of Shapes by Tetteh Adzedu, Elike Finishing School by Kofi Nkansa, MHOSENU Limited by Margaret Ofori-Atta and The PAF Outlet by Pearl Amoah where students do acquire additional practical experiences before branching out on their own.

With the aim to promote fashion education in Ghana, Fashion Forum Ghana’s quarterly series will gather fashion professionals from all aspects of the industry to attain informative, educative and offer a platform to learn, share ideas and discuss important topics that are significant to building Ghana’s Fashion Industry.
