From Accra to Lagos: Mr Eazi, how far so far?

The Nigerian-born music sensation, Mr Eazi kicked off his music career in Accra Ghana and introduced himself to the music biggest stage in Lagos Nigeria.

Born in Port Harcourt Nigeria in 1991 and relocated to Kumasi Ghana in the year 2008, Mr. Eazi is one of the artists that brought his own style to the Nigerian music industry which he tagged Banku Music, a fusion sound he describes as the mixture of “Ghanaian bounces, Ghanaian highlife, Nigerian chord progressions, and Nigerian patterns.”

Rel0cating to Nigeria in 2014 Mr. Eazi broke into the Nigerian music industry with his dancehall-influenced track “Skin Tight” which he released in 2015 and features guest vocals from Ghanaian singer Efya and was produced by DJ Juls. Due to the reception of the hit song Terry G jumped in the remix of the song which went viral upon release. The song went as far as getting international recognitions from American rappers, Nas and Nicki Minaj who danced to the tune at an NBA after party.

Mr Eazi’s ‘Skin Tight’ also caught the attention of international veteran rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs popularly known as Puff Daddy or simply P.Diddy. The American rapper and business mogul who assumes the second spot on the Forbes 2018 richest rappers in the world shared a clip via his Instagram page where he used Mr. Eazi hit track ‘Skin Tight’ for his Deleon Tequila and Ciroc Instagram advert. This explains how great the song was to have picked the interest of international veteran acts in the music game.

In an interview, Mr Eazi described the song as a “fusion”. He said he spoke Ghanaian pidgin on the delivery and used Nigerian melodies. In August 2016, Nigerian record producer Cobhams Asuquo released a rendition of the song. DJ Caise released a house remix of the song in September 2016. Mr Eazi was featured on Eugy’s 2016 hit single “Dance for Me”. A popular publication included the song on its list of the 10 biggest African tracks of 2016. On 17 June 2016, Mr Eazi released the R&B-inspired “Anointing”, a song that features rap vocals from Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie and was well received in Nigeria and beyond.

Following the public announcement by Nigerian Music sensation, Wizkid that Mr. Eazi has been signed to his imprint Starboy  Entertainment and the debunking of the news by the artist that he wasn’t officially signed to the record label, Mr Eazi dropped his second mixtape, ‘Life Is Eazi,Vol. 1 – Accra To Lagos, in 2017.

Winning the prestigious Headies music award’s ‘Next Rated’ category in 2016, Mr. Eazi gradually creep into our speakers and eardrums with his Life is Eazi, Vol.1 mixtape. This tape was the first body of work from the then reported Starboy Worlwide signee. The producer and artist features ranges from Masterkraft, Legendury Beatz, Maleek Berry, Olamide, Medikal, Mugeez, Falz, Phyno Dj Cuppy and more.

Leg Over

First song off the album, Leg Over heightened the expectations of the album after it’s release as a single, This song is still a jam which doesn’t get old to me. Big yansh is solely to confuse guys and that was what Mr Eazi sang about on this track.

Business Ft. Mugeez

The chemistry between Mugeez (R2bees) and Mr Eazi on this track was worth a mention, they both intertwined perfectly on this sound. its a slow bounce sound with a  solid production. one of the best collaborations on the mixtape.

Tilapia Ft. Medical

This was the second and last single before the release of the album. Tilapia featured Medikal. Another well-thought collaboration. It got to me when Medikal really thought because the songs name is Tilapia he can say ‘Something smells fishy Aquarium’ What a well-thought out coining!

Feelings

Wicked protection from Nigerian’s Young John. Mr Eazi married the beat perfectly with his delivery.  Nothing to really to nag about this tune. It was beautifully made.

Other tracks on the mixtape includes, ‘To My People,’ Fight featuring DJ Cuppy, ‘Accra To Lagos’ where he talked about his struggle in the music scene. Detty Yasef (feat. Falz), In the Morning (feat. Big Lean), Short Skirt (feat. Tekno), and finally ‘Life is Eazi’ (feat. Olamide & Phyno).

Back to the track. This is by miles my best track off the album, not because of Olamidenor Phynobut because of the beat and Mr Eazi. You just have to love his husky voice on this track. In my opinion, the track could do very well without Olamide and Phyno. No doubt they must added to the popularity of the song but the track is 5/5 on it’s own.

Mr Eazi annonnced via his Instagram account that the mixtape sold 200,000 copies in pre-orders. While speaking, Mr Eazi said the mixtape is a tribute to the two cities that influenced the evolution of his sound.
