Mafikizolo impresses at Hennessey concert

imagesIt was their first performance in Ghana and South African music group, Mafikizolo, didn’t disappoint many of their fans who thronged the Accra International Conference Centre last Saturday for the Hennessy Artistry concert.

The duo, who captured the hearts of many Ghanaians with their hit song, Khona, last year could probably be credited for being the “saviours” of the show which was almost a flop from the beginning.

Mafikizolo, sure knows how to rock the stage. Apart from dishing out some of their popular songs such as Khona, the audience were treated to great dance steps.

Their energetic dance moves got the audience on their feet throughout their almost one hour presence on stage. There was no doubt that they were the best act on the night. And there were calls for encore after they had performed.

With more than three hours behind the scheduled time, the programme which started at about 11 pm had female dancehall act, MzVee, as the opening act and her performance was just good enough to get the patrons in a party mood for the night.

Until MzVee hit the stage, many of the patrons who were disappointed had started expressing their frustration at the poor organisation of the event.

The singer made it up to them with her energetic stagecraft which got the audience to sing along as she performed many songs including Borkorborkor, Natural Girl, Revolution, Gimme Dat Dat Girl and Harmattan.

It was the expectation that Edem, the next act after MzVee will keep up with the momentum but he was rather a disappointment on the night. Even though he was loudly cheered by the audience when introduced, the Koene rapper didn’t give a good account of himself.

Many times, Ghanaian artistes have being criticised for their lack of “showmanship” on stage and Edem’s performance was one that lacked the energy to get an excited audience along with him.

The Heyba rapper just moved up and down the stage miming his songs, an act which probably didn’t go down well with the patrons who were seated watching him. He later introduced singer, Akwaboah, on stage and the duo performed their new collaboration, Zero to Hero.

It was also as if Nigerian artiste, Tuface aka Tubaba was not in his element last Saturday night. He talked more than necessary throughout his performance. His rather unnecessary comments especially on sex were uncalled for but surprisingly, he had many of the audience playing along with him.

There were performances by 4×4, Wizkid and a surprise act from VVIP to crown the concert which run into the wee hours of Sunday morning.

The event organised by Empire Entertainment had a good set design and the DJs for the night Nii Ayi Tagoe and DJ Barosky did a good job.

On the minus side, patrons had to sometimes wait for close to 20 minutes after  a performance for subsequent acts, patronage was low, some technical hitches and the MC for the night, Peace Hyde, failed to steer the affairs of the night well.
