Uncle Ebo has taste, he has eyes for quality – Minister admits

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare has given a huge thumbs up to renowned playwright James Ebo Whyte stating, his plays are “sharp” and of good “quality”.

The minister, who was part of thousands of patrons who attended the special viewing of Ebo Whyte’s latest production, ‘Unforgiven’, at the National Theatre Thursday, made the observation in an interview with Myjoyonline.com.

She disclosed that, this is her third time of watching Ebo Whyte’s production and admitted the playwright has good taste and eyes for quality, attributes that must be emulated by all.

“Uncle Ebo has taste, he has eyes for quality, all his plays are just sharp and perfect. He has good cast, his storyline is beautiful, you don’t even see that time is running. I think he has something good to offer Ghanaians,” Madam Agyare observed.

“I can say that for what he is doing, [and] the kind of education he is giving to Ghanaians. I invite corporate Ghana to support him to do even more,” she urged for support for Ebo Whyte’s productions.

The Minister said: “on the part of the Ministry, we are doing it in conjunction with him that is why he has the National Theatre for the plays and I think it is in the right direction. The ministry alone can’t support this good initiative, we encourage other people to support him to do what he is doing.”

In September 2008, Roverman Productions kicked off its ambition to provide Ghanaians with quarterly plays and six years on, it has staged 23 plays with ‘Unforgiven’ being the 24^th.

‘Unforgiven’ is a play that gives patrons a peep into Roverman Productions – how they audition characters for their plays – but with the central theme of empowering woman attached to it.

The play highlights the unimaginable possibilities that will be unleashed when men support women by building their capacity to become economically independent.

‘Unforgiven’ tells the story of Wofa Charles, a playwright/director who inspires and pushes people beyond their comfort zone; Yaa a woman in an abusive marriage who wants to become a star; OC, a musician who is close to Wofa Charles but does not live his values; and Sweetie, who is willing do anything for her dreams.

Things took an interesting twist when on the day of production, the secret Yaa has been keeping for 16 years comes haunting her and also threatens the production. ‘Unforgiven’, without a doubt another funny, profound, witty and inspiring piece from James Ebo Whyte.

Asked if the play is a reflection of Ebo Whyte and Roverman Productions, the renowned playwright told responded in the affirmative saying, it was a deliberate move to give patrons a peep into their world.

“You saw a creative representation of Uncle Ebo, [you saw] a creative representation of Roverman Productions and it was deliberate because, we said for our sixth anniversary we were going to give people a peep into what we do because we’ve given our patrons peeps into other lives, into other worlds and for sixth anniversary so we thought that let the joke be upon us,” he said.

Ebo Whyte added that ‘Unforgiven’ is a creative work but “it is based on some of the experiences of Roverman”.

The play shows at the National Theatre on Saturday, August 30 and Sunday, August 31. It will also show on Saturday, September 6 and Sunday, September 7.
