2012 In Review: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

All too soon, we have said Good Bye to 2012 – what an eventful year it was. It has been a great year like I always say and this time around for Sarkodie…Winning a BET award perhaps was the biggest thing that has happened to him.

I’m sure he will appreciate and still remember his BET experience in many years to come more than even the day he broke his virginity. He also picked couple of awards at the 2012 Ghana Music Awards including ‘Artiste of the Year’ with his popular azonto track ‘U go Kill Me’.

The biggest or best news in 2012 for most Ghanaians will be Sarkodie’s triumph at the BET whiles the death of Ghana’s first sitting president Atta Mills will be the saddest. Another high profile death was the demise of Alhaji Aliu Mahama.

This year, Rapper Okyeame Kwame set a new standard with his Versatile Show. Ghanaians witnessed something different. It has been an experience and eventful year.

I can’t forget the drama as I journeyed to Nigeria to cover the Africa Movie Academy Awards [AMAA] in Lagos for the second time. Even as I got into the Air Nigeria aircraft to embark on the journey with my partner-in-crime; Ameyaw Debrah [I know what you are thinking, you can keep it to yourself], the AMAA red carpets had started.

I missed my afternoon flight, so Ameyaw joined me in the evening flight. When we finally got to Lagos, in order not to miss the entire red carpet experience, we hurriedly joined a private car at the airport to transport us to the venue, Eko Hotels.

Very strangely, we paid almost thrice the amount that anybody could have paid on a normal day. We were not Nigerians and JJC [Johnny Just Come] was boldly written on our faces. Well we managed to join in the red carpet to capture some few shots.

I can’t forget about 2012 without that experience. I can’t wait for next year already. Here is a little highlight of events that happened in 2012, ‘the good’, ‘the bad’, and ‘the ugly’.

The Good
After many years of trying to write his name as proud winner of the AMAA, Majid Michel finally picked the nod in 2012 with the movie ‘Somewhere In Africa’ http://www.ghanacelebrities.com/2012/04/28/majid-michels-african-movie-academy-awards-journey-not-so-smooth-he-says-but-promises-to-be-back-again-next-year . His journey for the award started in 2009 though.

Rapper, Sarkodie co-won the BET African Act alongside Wizkid from Nigeria. It was as if it was long overdue for Ghana but he made Ghana proud with the honour. The likes of Kojo Antwi and D-Black opened the way for him.

I have always said that, I like it when people who have enough give to the needy. Drive Time host on Joy FM, Bola Ray donations to the SOS Children’s Village in Tema has become an annual event. I can’t wait for January for another experience.

In 2012 Ghana witnessed a different film festival; Festival Of Films Africa (F.O.F.A) http://www.ghanacelebrities.com/2011/12/08/festival-of-films-africa-f-o-f-a-sets-for-march-2012 . The four days festival brought together film makers across Africa and the Diaspora under one umbrella to showcase the beautiful works of African film makers. It was a festival worth supporting.

After many months of playing hide and seek, the Department of Homeland Security approved VISAs for the 12 contestants of the ‘The Spirited Actor’ – The Search For Africa’s Next Hollywood Star Reality Show which is scheduled to take place in New York.

I was particularly happy because the insults the organisers received due to the delays in the issuing of the VISAs were ‘unprintable’. Come and see insults flying here and there.

Another good news for me in 2012 was the fact that former Miss Ghana Benita Sena Golomeke who picked the nod in 1997 managed to win the Parliamentary seat for Ledzokuku Constituency representing the NDC. Even though she’s not an indigene of the area, she won majority of the votes to catapult her to parliament. I’m hoping for one thing, that she doesn’t confuse the male parliamentarians.

I also like the fact that when Vodafone ousted MTN to the sponsorship of the Ghana Music Awards, they increased the prize money to GH¢2.000 to each winner and GH¢10.000 for the Artiste of the Year. In terms of music production, the amount is nothing to write home about but it’s a step in a right direction. After all Rome was not built in a day.

The Bad
After getting selected as one of the three reps to represent Ghana at the Big Brother Stargame, Eazzy dropped Richie and Lynx Entertainment, the record label that discovered, nurtured and brought her to the limelight.

Her other reason was that, the label was not doing enough to project the Eazzy image. Rapper Asem was dropped by the label during when he was accused of raping a young girl whiles OJ Blaq also left the label because of the same reason of not getting enough exposure.

Praye’s breakup also made lots of noise in several platforms. I personally didn’t like their cock and bull story.

I don’t know if this is good or bad but can you believe that Jeremie of YFM said she’s a virgin at 27? Did I just say that? Oh I forgot to tell you that, her former boyfriend came out to say that, probably she’s a virgin in her mind. Whether real or mind virgin, all-virgin-be-virgin. Na lie? LOL

Another funny one here. The name changing comedies continued in 2012 from 2011. Former Ghana BBA rep, Mimi Divalish changed her name to Habiba. Hmmmm I’m considering changing my name from Ebenezer to perhaps … [pause] but is a decorated monkey a lion or still a monkey? Just wondering … LOL

2012 also saw the breakup of the group RNM [Rhythm & Melody] winners of the first edition of the Vodafone Icons Divas Edition as one member Denice opted out. A new member, January joined the group.

Songstress Efya denied using weed, cocaine and other hardcore drugs. But she said she smokes cigarettes. I like the bit where Akosua Agyepong advised her against smoking and of course she has failed to heed to the little and harmless advice.

The Ugly
In a crucial penalty against Zambia in the Semi Finals of the 2012 African Cup of Nations, striker Asamoah Gyan failed to convert the first half kick and Ghana subsequently lost the match.

The striker was subjected to various insults which forced him to take few months off his playing duty for the country. He has since returned to the team as he continues to score for his team in UAE.

Kwaw Kese was refused entry into London and detained at the airport because of incomplete travelling documents. This happened when he was travelling to begin his ‘The Popping Tour in the UK’ tour.

Death laid its icy hands on Ghana’s sitting President John Evans Atta Mills, Veep Alhaji Aliu Mahama and actor Gideon Kotey. Mothers of Black Stars’ players Anthony Annan and Asamoah Gyan also lost their lives.

In an interview with Delay on her interactive show, Wanlov showed his genitalia during filming when he was challenged. However the video was blurred when it was telecast but TV3 didn’t take it lightly as the show was suspended and later moved to another station.

Last year, Rapper Tiffany forgot her naked photos and were leaked, by failing to delete them after taking and sending them to her boyfriend in London…The photos were slapped with several insolent comments such as ‘her boobs no fine too’.
