Abena, who takes inspiration from other female artistes in the industry, said she is ready to “claim the position of the best female rapper in GH” and goes on to lay emphasis on that in her new song.
Abena who is signed on to HiGrade Media Consult raps about how prepared she is to take over the rap game with her skills as well as break records set by her predecessors. That, she said, was her best bet to get to the top.
Abena is rendered in the Twi and English languages. Abena raps over a catchy hiphop beat and gets her flow on point with her “tight” lyrics.
Her delivery shows that the Level 300 student of the Data Link University has studied the art of rap and just putting into practice what she had learnt over the years.
But would Abena, real name, Bernice Bediako ,survive in a male dominated field where the few female rappers seem to have fallen off the music radar after basking in the spotlight?
She remarked, “The reason why most Ghanaian females don’t last is because they refuse to defy the standards set for them by society. This limits them and hinders their progress to greater heights.
“Female artistes have suffered this fate because they are mostly appreciated for their looks. Their talents don’t seem to really play a significant role and that I think had caused them to fade out.
“ It is about time the public appreciate our talents than what we have as women. I know I have got the looks but I am determined to work on my talent and make a conscious effort to churn out songs with mature lyrics. This should be enough for me to sail through”.
