The event, according to the organisers, NMJ Ghana, will bring together most of the screen gods and godesses of Nollywood, Ghana and other African countries as deserving actors and actresses are rewarded for their works.
The awards scheme which was launched in February this year seeks to reward outstanding actors from six African countries- Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa for their works in the year under review.
The nominations list which was released last month had popular Ghanaian actors such as John Dumelo, Kojo Nkansah Lil Win and Majid Michel in contention for the Golden Favourite Actor Award. They will face stiff competition from Nigeria’s Jim Iyke and Alex Ekubo.
The Golden Favourite Actress category has Ghana’s Yvonne Nelson, Ama K. Abebrese, Nadia Buari, Juliet Ibrahim and Nana Ama McBrown. They are up against the likes of Tonto Dikeh and Uche Jombo, both from Nigeria.
In all, 28 awards will be given out. According to Ms Esther Quayson, the Communications Director for the event, “We want to set a standard of excellence for the African movie Industry and to get international acclaim for its productions. So it is time to celebrate our own and it will be a night to have all the big African names on one big stage,” she stated.
She added that in addition to honouring the actors, the evening will be laced with performances from female rapper Eazzy, and Irene Logan. There will also be a pre-nominee cocktail party at the Oak Plaza Hotel on Friday, June 26, to set the tone for the main event the next day.
