 A violent, highly-incensed Kofi Adu, popularly known in showbiz as Agya Koo, is reported to have led macho-looking body-guards to a Kumasi Based radio station to give the staff hell- threatening to deal ruthlessly with any media person who dared “mess up with me this year.”
The renowned actor-co-median, who recently beat colleague Majid Michel to emerge the Best Actor at the maiden Ghana Movie Awards, allegedly stormed Dove Fm at Asokwa and stirred up a scene that almost halted the live transmission of an entertainment programme.
The incident happened last Saturday, during the station’s Entertainment Zone show, which discussed developments in the country’s entertainment industry, from music to movies, to celebrities, among others, between the hours of five and seven in the evening.
A source at the station who confirmed the incident to The Spectator on Tuesday, added: “He was very angry and behaved violently, throwing threats here and there, to the extent that he even said he’ll gun us down if we messed up with him this year.”
Isaac Addo, alias Dada-Ba, a staff of the station who was also on the panel during the entertainment show, denied that the panel used foul language against Agya Koo, and so wondered as to the motivation behind the actor’s unprovoked rude display.
Narrating the incident, Dada-Ba said the regular host of the programme, Kwame Agyei Kusi, had travelled for a funeral, prompting a colleague, Opoku Afriyie Richard (a sports journalist), to superintend over the show in his (Kusi) absence.
The panel had started “talking about the recent Most Popular Entertainer of Ghana (MPEG) 2010 awards held in Accra in which Asamoah Gyan was given the ultimate award.
“In our individual submissions, we even reached a consensus that the ultimate award should have rather gone to Agya Koo, because of his enormous contribution to the film industry in the year under review,” he said.
“Then all of a sudden, we heard some loud voices emanating from outside the studio, so I rushed to see what was happening and there, I saw Agya Koo threatening brimstone and fire and even attempting to enter the studio by force. He was throwing punches at the gate as some staff held him back.
“None of our security men was around by then, so we tried to contain the situation by ourselves, by immediately phoning Roman Father (a DJ at Gem FM, also in Kumasi), who happens to be Agya Koo’s closest friend.
“He (Roman Father) rushed here and calmed him down,” he said, adding, “he was here with his ‘macho’ bodyguards and two other guys. Gospel musician Herty Borngreat was also in the studio for an interview and I could see she was very shaken by the incident.”
As to what might have probably triggered the actor’s outburst, Dada-Ba believed ‘misinformation.’ “This is because he (Agya Koo) later called the station to say that he was misinformed and that someone had phoned to tell him that we were insulting him on air. He, anyway, sounded quite remorseful,” he added.
Efforts to reach the actor-comedian for a comment proved abortive.
It should be recalled that Agya Koo has, of late, earned media attention for not-so-good reasons. Early this year, he was alleged to have caused the dismissal of a colleague actress with whom he was shooting a movie with, from set.
Agya was alleged to have told the movie’s producer to choose between him and the actress, in a bizarre circumstance that forced the producer to dispense with the not-so-known actress. The public have since read several meanings in to the incident.
Only a fortnight ago, he was reported by a popular Accra-based radio station, PeaceFM, to have launched a verbal attack on the organizers of the MPEG awards, since he considered himself the best to have been crowned the Most Popular Entertainer of Ghana 2010, and not Asamoah Gyan. |
