Akablay off to hectic start
We are only a couple of weeks into the new year and guitarist, Akablay, is determined to keep the promise he made to himself that 2015 would be one of the busiest periods in his career.
He was at the Republic Bar at Osu in Accra last week and would play tomorrow, January 16, at the Piano Bar near the Greda Estates Roundabout at Teshie-Nungua with his Abiza Band.
With his highly-honed improvisational skills coupled with the smart ability to handle scripted pieces as well, Akablay easily stands out as one of the most accomplished guitar players on the popular music scene here.
“I believe there are many music lovers in the Teshie-Nungua area who are yet to hear me play live,” Akablay says. “The Piano Bar gig would be a great chance for them to come along and party to some great sounds.”
Last year was a busy time for Akablay. Apart from being adjudged the best guitar player at the 2014 Best Instrumentalists of Africa Festival (MIA) in Cotonou, Benin, he also played at festivals in Denmark and Germany.
Those gigs were in addition to his regular sessions at the +233 Jazz Bar and Grill, annual March 5 concert to mark the nation’s independence anniversary and two dates with acclaimed British jazz guitarist, Peter White, at the Labadi Beach Hotel.
With three albums under his belt and captivating own renditions of songs by artistes such as Michael Jackson, Bessa Simons and King David, Akablay says it would be a thrilling session of highlife, jazz and other styles at the Piano Bar on Friday, January 16.
