Ambolley vows to continue GHAMRO fight

Mr Ambolley, whose injunction to halt the election of the Kojo Antwi-led GHAMRO board was dismissed by the Accra Circuit Court, said he was still determined to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.

In an interview with The Mirror last Tuesday, Mr Ambolley described the election of the Kojo Antwi-led board as a sham and not in line with the laws of the organisation.

“The entire election was in bad taste and there is no way I can accept it. Why is it that Kojo Antwi was made to run unopposed? Enough information was not put out about the election for both the public and musicians but suddenly  there were adverts in the newspapers that the election was about to be held. There is no way these deceitful people should be made to lead us,” he said.

“There are over 2,000 members in MUSIGA but less than 300 of them bothered to vote at the election. This shows that the vast majority of musicians are not in favour of this board,” he stated.

Apart from Kojo Antwi, the new GHAMRO board is made up of Nana Tuffour, Ahmed Banda, Diana Hopeson, Mary Ghansah, Bessa Simon, Zapp Mallet, Augustina Addison and Nana Kwaku Duah (Tic Tac). Others are Benjamin Mensah, Manu Francis, Amponsah Seth and Reverend Francis Boahene.

Mr Ambolley said that he was surprised that though the rules of the organisation stated that no individual who owned or operated a radio station could be elected as the head of GHAMRO,  Kojo Antwi was made to stand for election.

According to Mr Ambolley, he had been approached by representatives of MUSIGA to settle the matter amicably but he had turned down those requests.

He said the reason he was determined to see the right thing done with  GHAMRO and also the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), was the fact that he had witnessed  the sad plight of musicians who were struggling financially because they had been deprived of earnings due them.

“Music is my God-given talent and I have to ensure I make the most out of it before I retire. I can’t let anybody, whether at GHAMRO or MUSIGA,  deprive me of this,” he stated.

The GHAMRO election was held at three centres in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale  on Wednesday, February 11 under the supervision of the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
