Solving the problem of plastics-pollution and achieving gender equality can go hand-in-hand. Today I am very proud to announce a humble grant of GHS160,000 in Australian Aid that will be the start of something much bigger. The grant will support women who collect rubbish in Accra to innovate and become plastics entrepreneurs. Across Ghana, ladies like Vida, Hawa and Hilda work long days collecting and selling plastics for very little income. Many are single mothers who have lost their husbands. They get up early and work late each night collecting plastic bottles to support themselves and their children. Now thanks to our project with Ghanaian NGO Environment360, they will be turning plastics into useful products to sell at a higher price thus earning more money to support themselves and their children. Watch this space as their ideas emerge and we work with local supermarket chains to promote their products.
