Brandy & Monica Cover Ebony Mag, Interview + Photoshoot

Brandy and Monica aint playing this year. The two have graced the cover of June 2012 issue of Ebony Mag with beauty and glamour. In the magazine,  they dish out on love, their rivalry, how they healed it, career, future, friendship, family, etc…

Check out excerpts of their interview below

Monica on their partnership: “There’s something magical between us. We havedifferent styles. Part of what makes our voices different is the fact that our personalities are so different. I may say it with a little more attitude; she may say it with sultriness, because she has an amazing tone, and the way she arranges things. [Our] two [styles] are compatible.”

Brandy on their reunion on It All Belongs To Me: “This idea just came about. I wanted to actually do a song with her a while back but it wasn’t the right time. We didn’t have the right song, or I wasn’t signed at the time. Monica was doing her own thing, so it was…we didn’t want to repeat ‘The Boy Is Mine.’”

Monica on her music back in the 90s: “I didn’t try to sing in a pop format. I sang soulfully and bluesy. When I look back on those times, I didn’t think about the music. I just sang it.”

Brandy on her 90s fame: “I was living my dream. Everything I wanted to do was happening, and more. I was like ‘Oh my God, I’m making it; I’m successful.’ But then, there was another side of me: a teenager who just wanted to hang out, wanted to have a crush on somebody without somebody [else] judging.”

Brandy on her daughter Sy’Rai: “She inspires me. She wants me to get out there.”

Brandy on boyfriend/ co-manager Ryan Press: “I wish we were engaged. He’s taking a little long on the ring side of things, but I’m patient. I wanted to impress him. I wanted him to be proud of me;  was inspired by him. So making the record and his being there, t was just all a part of it. Him and my daughter. I want him to love my songs. I want him to love my voice.”

Brandy on brother Ray J: “Our relationship is very honest. I know who he is. And I’m pissed off about some of the things I’ve been hearing. It really bothers me that [those are] the kind of things that people do for money. He’s misunderstood. It’s one thing to have this image of [a ladies’ man], but it’s another to become this other type of person that they’re trying to make my brother out to be. I know who he is. This is a man who loves his mama and his sister and his niece. Ray J loved Kim Kardashian. They were irresponsible with their–you know–but he loved her. For five years, he was with her. In his mind and in the world’s mind, he was in my shadow for such a long time. To watch his sister become whatever I became and to not have that same path or that same way it happened for me; to be called ‘Brandy’s brother…’ Meaning, I love being your brother, but I have a name. I have my own talent. To finally break out of it, you’re going to brag; you’re going to feel something about yourself. It’s not coming from a bad place, and I can tell you: Some of the shoes Ray J’s walking in, you’d take off immediately. You wouldn’t be able to handle the type of shoes he’s in.

On the December 2006 highway accident and the deaths of two of her Moesha co-stars Lamont Bentley in 2005 and Merlin Santana: “I don’t  know how to say this, because I had to come through a lot after the accident: I didn’t want to be alive at one point in my life. I just didn’t, because someone else had lost their life, and I wondered why am I here? It was something I could not understand. And though it was proven to be whatever it was, just to be a part of that…felt awful and weird and strange and all the words that didn’t mean anything positive. But [because of] the love of my family and the love of my friends, I was able to come through such a time when I didn’t think I was going to make it. Ad from there, I started to have a better relationship with God. I surrendered my entire life, everything. I promised God, and I promised myself, that I was going to live a life of purpose.”
