In an article for The New Yorker, Chimaamanda shares her experience with grief and loss following the sad passing of her father, coming to terms with the new reality, her pain, how she cried for days and how much she missed him.
“Grief is a cruel kind of education. You learn how ungentle mourning can be, how full of anger. You learn how glib condolences can feel. You learn how much grief is about language, the failure of language and the grasping for language” she says
The whole grief process hasn’t been easy on her as she admits things haven’t quite been the same since then.
She explained the loss happened a few minutes before midnight on June 10. Her sister Uche had broken the news to a family friend through text and she remembered screaming she shouldn’t have, as telling people would make it true.
She wishes she could turn back the hands of time and prevent what happened on June 10th, 2020, to make it un-happen.
Grief comes in waves and losing a loved one can create pain so devastating.
