CORRUPTION: UNIVERSITY OF GHANA SRC PRESIDENT RISKS BEING REMOVED FOR EMBEZZLING GHC66,138.00

Corruption is now a global canker which ought to be nipped in the bud. However it is gaining root in every facet of our society including our academic institutions.

Contrary to article 52 clause of the SRC constitution which states that, ‘Where, in respect of the semester, it is found that the amount of monies appropriated for any purpose is insufficient or that a need has arisen for expenditure for a purpose for which no sum of money has been appropriated, a supplementary estimate showing the sum of money required, shall be presented to the General Assembly for its approval’.

The SRC president of University of Ghana, Mr. Isaac Agyeman could not account for the excess expenditure of GH¢66,138.00 which was not approved during the first sitting of the General Assembly.

According to the budget statement of the SRC, the house approved a lump sum of GH¢ 365,452 from the SRC dues as expenses for the first semester of the 2019/2020 academic year.

However, the ‘Income Statement’ presented to the house showed that an amount of GH¢ 431,590 was withdrawn from the dues indicating an excess of GH¢ 66,138 spent.

The president has been given 7 days to account for the money or risk being impeached.
The issue has been referred to the Audit board of the SRC for investigations.
