COVID-19: Parliament Bans Public Attendance

Parliament has banned all Public attendance to their sittings in the wake of the spread of the coronavirus.According to them, it is part of the measures taken to protect members the public, MP's and staff from contracting the virus and helping to contain the situation.

Speaking on Okay FM's ‘Ade Akye Abia' program, Minister Parliamentary Affairs and Majority Leader, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu explained that members of the public who are interested to see how laws are enacted and also enjoy parliamentary proceedings frequently visit the House.

However, decision has been taken to ban all such activities.

He said members of the public who frequently visit the House to observe sittings should kindly take note and comply.

“Parliament has also taken the necessary steps and directives given by the President to ensure that MPs and workers are safe,” he added.

The has banned all public gatherings including conferences, workshops, funerals, festivals, political rallies, church activities, and other related events as part of measures to stop the spread of coronavirus in the country.

President Nana Akufo-Addo in a national address on Sunday [March 15, 2020] said the ban will be in force for the next four weeks.

“I have decided in the interest of public safety and the protection of our population to review the public gathering advisories earlier announced as follows: Firstly, all public gatherings including conferences, workshops, funerals, festivals, political rallies, sporting events and religious activities, such as services in churches and mosques, have been suspended for the next four (4) weeks,” the President said.

He said private burials are allowed but should just be for a few people.

“Private burials are permitted, but with limited numbers, exceeding twenty-five (25) in attendance.”

The World Health Organization has warned that the coronavirus pandemic is a “defining global health crisis of our time”, as it urged countries to test all suspected cases.

Globally, the virus has now infected more than 168,000 people and killed at least 6,610, according to the WHO.
