Ghana spends two forms of currencies — the cedi and the pesewa. On the fifty pesewas coin is a woman who is not known by many people.
The woman is in the person of Rebecca Naa Dede Aryeetey, who was known popularly as Dede Ashikishan. She was the Queen of the flour business in Accra back then. As the meaning of her name ‘Ashikishan' means flour.
She was born in 1923 by Ataa Ayite and a ‘Ga' woman.
After elementary school, she started a flour business of which she became a business tycoon. She was very prosperous and had her mansion at Kokomlemle.
She campaigned for and funded Nkrumah to win at Asiedu Keteke, the nerve center of the Ga Dangme Confederation. If Nkrumah lost this seat, he would never be Prime Minister of Ghana. When Nkrumah was released from prison in 1951, Gbedemah had mobilized market women as the backbone of the CPP in Accra and the group leader was Dede.
