Ebola Scare Hits Night Clubs

imagesNightclubs operators in the Western regional capital, Sekondi-Takoradi, have been forced to come to terms with low patronage since reports about the outbreak of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in some West African countries began to dominate media discussions in Ghana.

Some nightclub workers who spoke to Entertainment Today disclosed that sales have dropped significantly for the past one month, a situation they attributed to the media’s exaggeration on the mode of transmission of the virus.

They, however, called for proper public sensitisation to dispel fears in society. Meanwhile visits to some popular nightclubs in the metropolis revealed a massive drop in attendance even during weekend ‘peak hours’.

Speaking on the disease, the Western Regional Director of Health Service, said human-to-human transmission can only be possible if an infected person is going through the latter stages of the disease.

According to him, such a person will be too weak to freely access public facilities such as nightclubs and mark.

However, he urged the public to limit human-to-animal contacts since all wild animals are potential carriers of the virus whose natural host is the fruit bat.
