A video capturing the moment, the lawmaker representing Surulere constituency in Lagos, Desmond Elliot called for social media regulation during a plenary session at the Lagos House of Assembly, has been making the rounds online.
“In the next five years, there will be no Nigeria if we don’t act now”, he said in the new video.
He also complained bitterly about how children insult politicians on social media at will. “Culture has gone”, he lamented.
The nollywood veteran has come under attack for referring to protesters as children and saying that Nigeria may disintegrate if the social media space is not regulated.
He had urged social media influencers, celebrities to stop spreading hate via social media.
In reaction to the video, award winning artiste Davido, and some Nigerians has expressed their displeasure over Desmond Elliot’s statement.
Here are some comments:
@Davido: “Desmond Elliot just destroyed all the precious childhood memories he gave us in movies.”
@sa_vvy_: “So Desmond Idiot thinks in the next five years there’ll be no Nigeria, not because of our murderous leaders or the high rate of poverty, but because of social media. that man has lost the plot.
@Drolufunmilayo: “People died.
But Desmond is more angry about online “curses” against their killers.
“People were massacred but Desmond is more angry about the Oba Palace. People were murdered but Desmond is more angry about social media. Dear young Nigerian, I hope you now know your enemies.”
@Chlemchi: “How old is Desmond Elliot to call young people children? This is the illusion of political office in Nigeria. It makes one think they are infallible.”
@amakadiva09: “Desmond Elliot is a proof that having youths at the helm of affairs in this country is not a guarantee for good governance. You can’t vouch for anyone, power changes people. ”
