Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. Initially, dancehall was a sparser version of reggae http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggae than the roots http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roots_reggae style, which had dominated much of the 1970s. In the mid-1980s, digital instrumentation became more prevalent, changing the sound considerably, with digital dancehall (or “ ragga http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamaican “) becoming increasingly characterized by faster rhythms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragga

In the mid-1990s, a number of dancehall Bobo Shanti artists, such as Sizzla http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sizzla and Capleton http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capleton , developed a very strong connection between dancehall and Rastafari. Indeed, this style of music has come under criticisms from international organizations and individuals, for its violent and sometimes homophobic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobic lyrics, although the lyrical themes are more varied than simply dealing with slackness http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mansions_of_Rastafari and violence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slackness

The workshop/concert is being organized by Xstacy with support from L'Institut Francais and the Alliance Française in collaboration with the French Embassy in Accra.
