Ghana Police ‘Fingered’ In Fennec Okyere’s Murder Case

imagesThe Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD- Ghana), in their last Afro-barometer report cited the Ghana Police Service as most corrupt public institution with as high as 89% of respondents.

The survey was conducted between May and June 2014 and about 2400 respondents were asked to rate public institutions including the Ghana Revenue Authority, as well as government officials and Members of Parliament.

The Police CID attitude towards investigations in the country, could they be possibly proving CDD-Ghana right? Or maybe, the in-charge officials of Fennec’s case are just stressed out?

The mass have lost confidence, hope and trust in the police institution, we doubt the competence of the Police institution and as it appears even cases with visible evidence like the cocaine-turn-konkonte saga; Ruby-cocaine-saga (including the 6-accomplices trial); and the NDC Man, Kodzo Hamenya Keglo busted for cocaine saga (reported by Daily Guide);

Therefore, how possible is it then for the Police CID to unravel Fennec Okyere’s murder case which comes with few crime scene samples and no evidence?

Usually surprised by the instance made to deem the institution’s capability to have laid hands on the lead-killer, Kwesi Appiah Buahene of  Kwaku Ninja and Taller case at Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region in 1998 after 15 years; have there been any other of such cases unravelled? (I stand to be corrected)

It is very true that conducting investigations can take between 5 and 30 years and sometimes, even more years to unravel the actual perpetrators of a criminal case (murder, theft, etc.); but is there any hope at all with the Fennec Okyere’s case although the Homicide Unit are figuratively putting in all possible efforts to lay hands on the possible evidence?

Outlining the procedures in which investigations are carried out in Ghana; CID PR, ASP Joseph Benefo Darkwah in a previous interview with AmaLarbieAfrica, defined investigation as “it is a way of gathering evidence or information including data collection which has linkage to the offence reported so as to approve or disapprove an alleged offence committed as well as assist trace the perpetrators of the crime who will no longer be a suspect instead be charged with the offense.”

“No crime docket is closed, or a suspect falsely charged although a case of public interest may delay prosecution; rather we do a thorough investigation on such cases,” he said when asked if crime dockets are closed or ‘buried’ without revisiting the case after some time.

But isn’t Fennec’s case long closed and dead? Much can’t be said about how cases and their investigation are conducted in various continents, but the Ghana Police Service seems good in ‘verbal actions’ than ‘practical actions’.

Marking exactly a year and 10-days after he was found lying face down in a pool of blood; Fennec Okyere was murdered at his Manet Cottage at Spintex, Accra residence on Thursday, March 13, 2014.

On Friday, March 13, 2015, a year after his death; Kwaw Kese together with close friends of Fennec, mostly media personals gathered at the Afrikiko Leisure Center in a solemn candle light vigil with each of them lighting a candle to remember the life of Fennec and their individual experiences with him.

The vigil was also basically to remind the Ghana Police to speed up their investigations and at least come up with some findings on his murder as reported on Peacefmonline.com.

Some of the notable faces present included Kwaw Kese’s new manager, Kevin Aggrey; Broadcaster/Entrepreneur, Bola Ray; Lexis Bill of Joy FM; Actor and Broadcaster, Mikky Osei Berko; Music Producer and Sound engineer, Panji Annof; Producer Hammer of The Last Two; Radio/ TV Presenter, Afia Schwarzenegger; TV Host, Babie Dapaah; Ohemaa Woyege of Adom FM; Jerry Justice of Adom FM; Entertainment Writers, Eugene Osafo-Nkansah of Peacefmonline.com and Dela Aglanu of Myjoyonline.com; among others.

Meanwhile, according to family of the late Fennec Okyere; the actual one year anniversary of their beloved will be held on the day of his burial which was on Saturday, April 26, 2014.

Therefore, on April 26, 2015, the family, friends and sympathizers would officially gather to mark one year of his death.

The Investigations So Far…….

2-months-2days after tracking the perpetrators of the murder; the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service arrested the founder of BullHaus Entertainment; Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, well-known as Bull Dog as the prime suspect on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at about 15:45 GMT in Kokomlemle, a suburb of Accra.

And there have been no other suspects or reason to think that there actual suspect may be still out there.

The arrest of Bulldog as the prime suspect was based on the fact that he on November 26, 2012 had a confrontation with Fennec during a programme at the Accra International Conference Centre dubbed, ‘Night with the Stars’, organized by Accra-based radio station, Joy FM; an already public-known incident.

According to the Director General of the CID, COP, Mr Prosper Agblor, investigations proved that after an interview on Peace FM’s entertainment review show which had both Fennec and Bulldog on; the suspect was offended by the answers provided by the deceased to questions from the host, hence;

“After the programme, Bull Dog called Fennec and threatened to send his boys after him to teach him a lesson and to get rid of him,” he said.

Subsequently, the CID Boss as reported by Daily Graphic said that there were series of threatening voice calls and text messages from unknown persons believed to be agents of the suspect.

The police investigations also established that on March 12, 2014, Fennec received a call from an unknown caller.

Another factor that lead to his becoming the prime suspect of the murder case was according to COP Prosper Agblor, indicated that; “Surprisingly, the suspect (Bulldog) went into hiding after the murder of Fennec. The police monitored his house and other places including entertainment shows, but he (Bulldog) failed to show up.”

But did the unit official in-charge of Bulldog’s surveillance as well do checks with the various radio entertainment programmes he was a panel member on to verify if he was on those shows or absented himself as they are perceiving that he avoided all public gatherings?

Then again, if the Homicide Unit could not gain access to the suspect’s phone; what are the visible prove like either a snapshot of at least one of the death threat messages (date and time) Bulldog sent to Fennec; or his arrest was just one of the ‘tip-offs-like bases’ or the high intelligence of analysing and contrasting the case?

Because, all what was said by COP Prosper Agblor were already known to showbiz observers, pundits, and oh, the Friends of the media know the A to Z of the above COP Agblor’s details on why Bulldog was arrested.

Just asking, please didn’t the unit also hear that the deceased had few weeks before his murder said in an interview with News One on February 13, 2013  that he had received threat calls during MadTime Entertainment tussle with MUSIGA over who has the legal right to organize Ghana Music Week/ GMW Festival?

An excerpt of the interview: [“I have received calls from people who threaten me with death and ask me why I am worrying Obour over this Ghana Music Week thing and whether I do not know this is big money business.”

…“I know how to go about taking care of my security; and I am not taking chances at all. I have to report the threats to the police because we are all in this industry and I hear a lot of things,” Fennec added] Even in its absurdity, is that not a case to as well link his death with MUSIGA, though Prez Obour was invited for interrogation?

And what happened to the various informations relayed to the Unit during interrogation with persons including Abeiku Santana; Fennec’s wife, Amakie; his caretaker, Believer; his very close friend Eugene Osafo-Nkansah (Peace FM); Kwaw Kese (Fennec’s artiste); Bice-Osei Kufuor (MUSIGA President); family spokesperson and Ablekuma West MP, Ursula Owusu; Kevin Aggrey (Kwaw Kese’s other manager); some officials of Zoomlion and Jospon group of companies; and Nii Gbatsonaa (caretaker of his lands), among others.

At least with the various informations gathered during the interrogation with no doubt, might hint the Homicide Unit on certain vital informations; unless of course, the majority of the persons interrogated mentioned Bulldog as the possible killer; or the unit just see no clue and essence of the either of the informations relayed to them during the various interrogations.

Hence, if upon all these routine checks and the unit can still not figure out other suspects; then one may conclude that the ‘incompetence’ of the Police Service has risen to its highest peak and the outfit is indeed proving CDD-Ghana’s Afro-barometre report right.

As we all have our decent, ugly and combined, decent and ugly attitudes which we all bury away from the public-knowing; couldn’t it have possibly been a business deal gone badly? Because, for what reason would the hirer of the assassins or the assassins as well steal his laptop, phone, and ransack his bedroom?

Obviously, there are certain infos on the laptop that the killers or hirer could not afford being made public hence the order to take it along after the assassination.

The case, in the psychological term dwells on essence overriding existence; simply put the killers (or hirer) saw the importance of revenging whatever pain or wrong Fennec might have inflicted on him or her than maintaining and protecting his or her name in the good deeds book.

Well, just maybe as the Homicide Boss, DSP William Seduamey said in a chitchat with AmaLarbieAfrica that to save the family away from refreshing their already deep-wounded hearts; they have decided to refrain from putting out names of other ‘suspects’ and individuals the unit is interrogating and surveilling. Does that also avoid the unit from updating the family on updates of the investigation too?

Because, on his one year celebration on March 15, 2015; aunt, lawyer, family spokesperson for Fennec Okyere, and Ablekuma West MP; Ursula Owusu expressed disappointment in the Police for not helping give Fennec’s family the updates they deserved on how far the investigation have gone.

“They haven’t told us anything, nothing! I knew that the Bulldog or Bullfrog thing was a dead end, and it proved to be that.

Well…anytime you make enquiries they tell you that they are on it. Frankly, I have stopped asking…” she said disappointingly in an interview with Starr News Parliamentary correspondent, Ibrahim Alhassan.

Just like the family made enquiries on the latest updates of the investigation; likewise the deceased’s wife, Amakie but it comes with same “We are on the case assurance” from the unit.

As the investigation adage goes; ‘Everyone is a suspect in a criminal case’; and whoever openly threatens (like, ‘I will teach you a lesson’) a fellow man becomes a prime suspect should anything happen to him or her. Bulldog, wonsempa!

Fennec Okyere, before his gruesome murder updated his WhatsApp status in the last hours of Wednesday, March 12, 2014 which read; “The microphones will move closer when is time.” We all know not what inspired the status.

He was the Project Manager of ZoomLion Ghana Limited; Manager of the Dome at Accra International Conference Centre, and managed Hiplife artiste, Kwaw Kese and had great ambitions for the Ghanaian entertainment industry among other businesses.

He also had other properties which his family and the police did follow ups on them at areas including Atoabo in the Western Region near the gas pipeline project which he intended using as a beach resort; a land also at Aburi, Trassaco and a couple of lands at Sakumono in Accra too.

Months after the incident and with no updates from the police; it is also gathered that his Manet Cottage at Spintex, Accra residence which doubles as the CRIME SCENE, has been rented out by the family with the intent of maintaining it until his son, Okatekyire Okyere who will celebrate his 3rd birthday in October this year, is of age to take over the house among other properties as stated in Fennec’s will.

On behalf of the general public, showbiz observers, pundits, musicians, etc.; we extend our deepest condolence to the family of Fennec Okyere.

Se asa? Fennec, due ne amanehunu!!!
