I started wearing beads when I was just two years old. Now I am a full grown woman and I still wear this beautiful evocative African ornament on my waist and so are many Ghanaian women from different tribal background. At a point in time contemporary women, with western knowledge neatly stuck in their faculties, shunned the use of beads. But lately women from all walks of life have embraced the culture and symbolism of waist beads which was passed on from our ancestors.

Waist beads emit several meanings, not only pertaining to the Ghanaian set-up but in Africa as a whole. The most significant thing is to shape or mould the body into a desired preference. Amongst the Akans especially Ashantis, waist beads is used as an indicator against obesity.

For many women, beads bolster their confidence, enhance their beauty and balance and define the femininity. Men who are lazy in bed become sexual heroes during sex when their partners wear beads.
