GIJ Decides At The Polls!
The Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) went to the polls to decide on the leadership of Students Representative council (SRC) leadership. The various positions being vied for are the SRC president, General Secretary, external affairs, Women’s commission and financial secretary.
Due to events that unfolded last year because of the unreliability of the electoral commission software this year it was done manually. Students had to take the sheets and append their thumbs. After the final voting all candidates and the representatives will be present for the counting.
Last year because of the software used most students couldn’t really see the fairness of the voting system as the winner and the second runner up had a difference of only 8 votes. This led to further misunderstanding led to the case being taken to court and the SRC was dormant for the whole of last semester and the current administration had just three months to work. The unavailability of the SRC brought a stand still all fun activities on campus which was a huge worry to students. The old system is more reliable fir students and easier to convince candidates the elections were fair.
During the past few weeks all the candidates for the various positions has been campaigning throughput campus and using social media to reach students. They all claim to be ready to change the front of students’ affairs and serve their interest. May the best candidates win and help build a better GIJ.
