Good Luck Or Good Preparation – Fred Kyei Mensah

imageLUCK OR GOOD PREPARATION?
In the year 2005,a PRIVATE UNIVERSITY in Accra needed a media house to help them in a documentary to advertise and promote their institution since their enrollment was not all that encouraging.
I sent my proposal and application for the job and was called for the interview. Prior to that, a lot of media houses had sent in their request and were all rejected. Some of them had better CV’s , experience and qualifications than my media house but, they lacked GOOD PREPARATION.
They were not really looking for who had the best video equipment, well written application etc BUT A CREATIVE MIND who could translate their vision into reality.
The appointed day came for the interview. I dressed like a director of a movie with my location jacket on, my laptop and my camera.
As i entered the interview room, the PROFESSORS and the “BIG MEN” looked at me curiously and were murmuring,” Can this guy be serious?
I was asked by one of them”HOW CAN YOU HELP US WITH THE WAY YOU ARE DRESSED? I laughed. I told them boldly that the job was for me because I was well prepared. They also laughed at me.
I told them first about the location of their institution. Whenever you hear about the word ZONGO with all respect what perception comes into your mind? Violence, dirt, poverty, squalor etc.etc. Fortunately or unfortunately, the University was situated at the ZONGO JUNCTION in Mataheko ,Accra so the attraction for people living in other areas thinking the institution wasn’t credible and thus, not worth patronizing. We needed to change that perception.I was told by the panel that so far I was the only person to have convinced them enough and was given the job. We shot the documentary and the rest is history. I got similar jobs from other tertiary institutions through their job. The University iam narrating my experience is the REGENT UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES,Accra. Iam happy to have been part of their success story. Was it luck or good preparation on my part? Scribbling something from my humble abode,POKUASE.
