Here is Sorgor with ‘Osee Ghana’

Singer Evans Owusu, known more as Sorgor, has brought a distinctive vocal quality to songs on his debut eight-track Osee Ghana album which has just been completed.

Sorgor has had an enduring admiration for Senegalese superstar, Youssou N’Dour’s style of delivery and the influence is clearly evident on the Osee Ghana collection.

On tracks like Adwoa, Ntaban and Kawa, he reaches out for the typical N’Dour high register and fuses it with his own natural range. The blend makes his songs quite compelling to listen to though one has to strain sometimes to catch his words.

Though an underground artiste, the determined young man has managed to get onto fairly major shows like George Darko’s 60th birthday and Kwaisey Pee and Friends AU Day concerts at the Golden Tulip in Accra and the Ghana Music Week 2013 bash at the Independence Square.

The Osee Ghana album was recorded at Gravity Studio at Kaneshie and General Bongo’s Studio at Baatsonaa, both in Accra. Sorgor tries to make a good impression by bringing on competent instrumentalists to help his cause.

Kologo player Atimbilla of MTN Hit-Maker fame adds a fresh flavour to the Adwoa highlife track. He plays the patterns usually handled by guitar players on highlife tracks and that lifts the song to a superior level.

‘Atimbilla’s contribution makes Adwoa my favourite song on the album. It is unique to hear the kologo doing all those delightful things normally taken by the guitar,’ Sorgor says.

Guitarist Owura Kay is prominent on Ntaban while percussionist Oko Amarteifio and backing singers, Nana Ama and Naa Kutorkor bring their own senses of colour to the songs.

It has been a long, hard road for Sorgor to get this far. He has so far picked all the tab for work on Osee Ghana and has to keep working hard to entrench his name in the music business.

He can get there if he is able to win music lovers over with his unfamiliar vocal approach.
