Indian-born Shelley Malil launched his attack after finding her at home with another man. He was convicted by a jury of attempted premeditated murder and assault with a deadly weapon. His victim Kendra Beebe suffered punctured lungs and injuries to her neck, chest, back and arms in the 2008 assault.
Malil will have to serve at least 12 years before applying for parole.
He said during his trial that he had only gone to her house in San Diego, California, to apologise for taking personal items from her home and to warn her that he had sent sexually explicit photos of them together to her work colleagues.
Appearing before San Diego County Superior Court, he apologised for the attack and said he wanted to go to prison. He said: “I want to do whatever I need to do to make sure I make right from the wrong that I did. “Kendra Beebe did not deserve anything that happened to her. I can't even begin to imagine what she has been through.”
Ms Beebe had earlier told the court his testimony during the trial had been “lie after lie after lie”.
She said: “During the course of the trial it became clear he was an actor, but not a very good actor at that.” Taking account of time already served and good behaviour prosecutor Keith Watanabe said Malil, 45, could be freed in as few as nine years.
Malil — who played Haziz in the hit movie starring Steve Carell — stabbed her with a kitchen knife. They had started dating in 2007 when Ms Beebe answered a dating advert. Two days before the attack, Malil left Ms Beebe and her cousin stranded at a beach and returned to her home where he stole marijuana and other items before locking her out of the house. His attorney argued that he never intended to kill her.
After the sentencing, Ms Beebe told reporters she believed justice had been done.No tags for this post.
