KKD up for jury trial; case adjourned to April 22

The fate of radio personality and entertainment icon Kwasi Kyei Darkwah, popularly known as KKD, who has been accused of rape, now lies in the hands of a jury.

After deliberations by state prosecutors and counsel for KKD during Wednesday’s hearing, the court directed that a jury to be empaneled to determine the outcome of the case.

A seven-member jury will be empaneled to look at the facts to help arrive at an outcome of the case as the state is seeking jail time for the entertainment icon, who was in court together with his father as well as rapper Okyeame Kwame.

The Airport Police arrested KKD on December 27, 2014 after the 19-year-old accused him of raping her in a hotel washroom.

The Human Rights Court in Accra granted the ace broadcaster bail on humanitarian grounds after 19 days in detention.

A Kaneshie District Magistrate court, presided over by Mrs Adwoa Akyaamaa Ofosu, last month committed KKD for trial at the High Court after the prosecution said it had established enough evidence to secure conviction for the radio personality.

The state is going ahead to prosecute KKD even though the alleged victim, 19-year-old Ewuraffe Orleans Thompson has written to them declaring her disinterest in the case.

The case has been adjourned to April 22 after state prosecutors asked for more time to put themselves together for the trial.
