Lil Wayne gives wheelchair to fan’s mother

How’s this for spreading holiday cheer: Lil Wayne, now a free man himself after his release from prison in early November, has helped someone else get out of confinement.

The 28-year-old rapper, who served eight months in New York’s Riker’s Island on a weapons charge, has bestowed the mother of fan Ronda Austin with a wheelchair.

He writes on his website, WeezyThanxYou.com, that he came to know Ronda through a series of letters she sent him while he was serving his sentence.

“The first time I wrote Lil Wayne I just let him know that I support him, and I’m gonna keep writing him until he comes out. Just giving him a lot of encouragement…[letting] him know that God is with him and… to keep his head up and stay encouraged,” Ronda, of Williamstown, New Jersey, explains in a video posted on Wayne’s site. “I talked a lot about my family, myself and especially my mom and dad.”

And then one day as she was driving, Ronda received a phone call from Wayne. “In the midst of our conversation, he said, did you and your dad get your mom a wheelchair yet?” When she told him she hadn’t, he replied, “Well, if you didn’t get it, don’t worry about it. I’m going to take care of it.”

Ronda’s mother Evelyn says that about 10 to 15 years ago her knees started going bad, to the point where she couldn’t walk anymore.
So Lil Wayne stepped in and sent her a Quantum 6000 wheelchair, which has allowed Evelyn to get out and about for the first time in years, Ronda said.

“I see such a difference in her; she has this get-up-and-go in her now. She’s mobile,” Ronda said. “When she’s actually up and about,” she went on, pausing with emotion, “it’s like….it’s just a good thing to see.”
