Marilyn Gyan wins 2014 Citi FM Write-Away Contest

Marilyn-takes-her-cheque-from-Mr-Aheto-TsegahMarilyn Nana Yaa Gyan, a fourteen-year old pupil of the Falsyd Foundation School has been crowned the winner of the 2014 edition of the Citi FM Write-Away Competition. Miss Gyan walked away with a GHc5000 cash prize, a medal, a hamper from Standard Chartered Bank, products from Indomie and a certificate of honor.

Vanessa Inkoom of the East Airport International School – Accra, and Nana Akua Aboraa Owusu Ababio of the Hilltop International Science College – Kumasi, placed second and third respectively. The fourteen-year old Vanessa took home GHc3000 cash prize, a medal, a hamper from Standard Chartered Bank, products from Indomie and a certificate of honor.

Nana Akua Aboraa Owusu Ababio won GHc1000, a medal, a hamper from Standard Chartered Bank, products from Indomie and a certificate of honor for placing third. She won an additional GHc500 cedis for winning the Most Promising Writer award.

Other winners include Melvina Quartey, for Best Plot, and Owura Osae Adade, for Best Young Writer. They each won GHc500 cedis, a medal, a hamper from Standard Chartered Bank, products from Indomie and a certificate of honor.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, the Acting Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Charles Aheto Tsegah, who was the chairman for the occasion said the Write Away Contest is “the best public contest that is dedicated to building the minds of children.”
Mr. Tsegah praised Citi FM for demonstrating consistency “to drive change.”

Educationist and Chief Examiner of the contest Annis Hafar, charged the Ghana Education Service do more to promote reading and writing in Ghana. He charged the service to “erect billboards across the country to encourage children to always read and write.”

Participants in this year’s contest were made to write their own short stories, with their own unique characters which ended with the idiom: ‘A bird in hand is worth two in a bush.’

The Citi FMWrite-Away Contest is sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank and Indomie Instant Noodles and supported by Finlite and the Volta River Authority (VRA).
