Mark Okraku Mantey, Socrate Safo, others support Nana Akufo-Addo

imagesSome personalities in the creative arts industry have thrown their weight behind Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, urging delegates to elect him as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

They include music producer Mark Okraku Mantey, and movie producer, Socrate Safo, who are members of Creative Arts for Change (CAfC), and believe the two-time flagbearer is best placed to serve the interest of the creative arts industry.

Some 787 delegates of the NPP are voting in Sunday’s polls at 11 polling centres in the ten regions of the country to select five candidates who will then vie for the party’s flagbearership slot.

Seven candidates, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, Stephen Asamoah-Boateng, Francis Addai-Nimoh, Kofi Osei Ameyaw, Alan Kyerematen, Nana Akufo-Addo, and Joe Ghartey are hoping to make it to the top five after Sunday’s voting.

CAfC in a statement, copied Myjoyonline.com, said “After deliberation and consideration of our interests, and having weighed the candidates out there, we publicly and openly endorsed Nana Akufo-Addo, and by extension the NPP. We are however not partisan or pro-NPP.”

According to the statement, signed by Mark Okraku Mantey and Socrate Safo, CAfC members are not card bearing members of the NPP but believe that Nana Akufo-Addo is the only candidate who has Ghana’s creative arts industry at heart.

“We take note of the fact that we are not card bearing members of your organization and therefore have no direct influence on your decisions. At best we can only lobby you for support and endorsement of Nana Akufo-Addo in the process of your primaries, specifically your Special Electoral College of this Sunday August 31st, 2014,” the statement said.

According to the CAfC, they “believe that Nana Akufo-Addo is our best bet for the development of our industry by all indications.  We have looked again at our interests, considered the depth of his understanding of those interests and taken cognizance of what the Ghanaian public has been saying publicly and privately. We believe he is the candidate we will work for to win the next general election. We therefore, humbly, urge you to endorse the candidacy of Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo at the Special Electoral College.”

The Creative Arts for Change members also noted that after further consideration over the period, they have “endorse Nana Akufo-Addo for the 2016 election.”

The Creative Arts for Change (CAfC), formed in 2012, is a collection of creative arts professionals who seek to lobby institutions – state, private, social or political – for policies and programmes that will serve the interest of the industry.
