Miss Malaika’14 takes handwash to schools

imagesMiss Eirene Binabiba, Miss Malaika 2014, is embarking on a handwash and sanitation tour as her project for winning the coverted title last November.

The tour dubbed, “The Malaika Handwash and Sanitation School Tour” which started on May 14 will see her visit 17 schools in Accra from now to the end of May after which she will head to Saboba in the Northern Region to continue with the exercise.

While at it, Miss Binabiba told Showbiz last Thursday that she will teach the school children between the ages of five and 15 the correct method of washing hands. I will take them through the right method of washing their hands with soap under clean running water. I will also give each school hand wash stations, dustbins, dustpans, soaps and sanitisers,’’ she said.

Asked what informed her choice of project, the visibly excited queen said she took the decision during the Malaika episodes, “during the pageant, there was a charity episode and my group chose hand wash campaign. I have always wanted to do something in relation to the environment so I decided that if I win, I will do something on sanitation and here we are,’’ were her words.

In addition to Lifebuoy, Miss Malaika’s campaign has been made possible with the support of her friends who went with her to the Nungua, Accra and West Hill Malls to solicit for funds. “Through social media, I also have a lot of volunteers who are on board helping.’’

Touching on how the pageant has changed her life, the 20-year-old beauty queen said she has met a lot of prominent people who have influenced her positively.

“Winning the crown has made me a bit more mature, before the Malaika pageant, there was no pressure on me but now I have to sit and schedule my time, thus my time management skills have improved a lot,’’ she said.

“It has also exposed me to a lot of prominent people in Ghana, people I can learn positive things from. When I go to companies to get sponsorship, I meet CEOs who advise me on which direction to take and that has helped me a lot,’’ she said.

Asked if she had any piece of advice for the youth, Miss Binabiba said “if you have any dreams at heart, so far as it is positive, pursue it. Be determined and focused and with prayers, everything is possible, remember to wash your hands the right way.’’

Miss Malaika is currently a student of the School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana majoring in Theatre Arts, Movie Directing.

She loves music to bits and plays the keyboard and the guitar. One is likely to find her singing and dancing in her spare time and she admires Pappy Kojo and Kingz Kid, both musicians.
