New Music Festival to be launched at Goethe-Institute

imagesThe 2015 edition of New Music Ghana Festival will on Thursday, February 12 be launched with a concert featuring the African Footprint International band at the Goethe-Institut in Accra.

A contemporary music group based in Cape Coast in the Central Region, African Footprint has over the years delighted music and dance lovers with an exciting fusion of jazz, funk, rock and highlife with elements of traditional Ghanaian music to create a new sound.

With two albums to its credit, the group has performed to cheering audiences at several large-scale multi-cultural festivals in Europe, the United States and other parts of Africa.

North Wings, a youth band based in Tamale, which won the 2014 edition of the festival, will open the concert with a blend of styles from the Northern and Volta regions.

As part of the programme, musicologist, Prof. John Collins, will launch ‘Ghana Sings’, a book on notated Ghanaian songs by Dinah Reindorf, Director of the Dwenesie Music Institute.

New Music Ghana Festival was initiated in 2009 by the Institute for Music and Development. It seeks to empower young musicians to develop a new genre originating from the numerous musical traditions in Ghana.

It also sensitises the youth to appreciate their own traditional musical forms and those of others while enhancing the understanding of cultural diversity through interaction with people from other cultures.

Goethe-Institut Ghana is sponsoring New Music Ghana Festival 2015, which is being organised by the Institute for Music and Development in collaboration with the Musicians Union of Ghana and Arterial Network Ghana.
