New TV series Mama Taxi on Viasat1

imagesAbout 15 years ago, TV viewers in Ghana were hit with Taxi Driver, the hilarious drama series featuring TT, the taxi driver and his team which  captured the hearts of many.

Come June 20, viewers will be hit with yet another drama series involving a taxi but this time around, a woman, Mama Rose played by Vivienne Achor will be in charge of affairs.

Mama Taxi which starts showing on Viasat 1 at 4.30 pm will feature  popular stars such as Dan Tei-Mensah, Emmanuel Armah, Tina Ghansah among others.

Mama Rose or Mama Taxi, is a taxi driver who believes she is responsible for helping her female colleagues transform the taxi business in order  to boost sales.

One particular taxi driver, Akweley, played by Tina Ghansah is one big headache for her. Akweley is the black sheep among the lady taxi drivers. She is always bent on provoking others and fomenting troubles among her colleagues.

Aside her usual antics, she is also a money conscious person taking advantage of the men who admire her and show concern anytime they hire her taxi.

In addition to the ‘wahala’ she has with some of her colleague taxi drivers, Mama Taxi has to grapple with her womanising husband, K.B, played by Tei-Mensah.

How is Mama Taxi able to reign her colleagues in? How does K.B deal with all his previous girlfriends who decide to fight their way back into his life? What does Akweley do to outwit her passengers? To find out how these and the rest of the cast combine their roles to tell their story, make a date with Viasat 1 as the plot unfolds.

In a chat with Graphic Showbiz last Thursday, Mr Martin Aboagye, Executive Producer of the series said the concept of Mama Taxi  is borne out of the fact that most of our young ladies who drop out of school engage in ‘streetism’; selling pure water, plantain chips, tiger nuts etc.

“ Some of their male counterparts who find themselves in a similar situation sometimes end up driving taxis and are able to live decent lives and take care of their families.

“The aim of this series is to change the misconception that taxi driving is a male dominated business in order to rope in more ladies.

“Mama Taxi is also an avenue we are going to use to empower women to be self sufficient, provide alternative opportunity for semi-educated and uneducated womens as well as improve standard of living of the numerous ladies on the streets and educate the public on driving ethics”, he said.
