Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Serebour Quaicoe has said in an interview that there will be no elections in 2020 if plans for the new register prove futile.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has suspended the compilation of the new voters’ register over the Coronavirus pandemic and its effects in the country.
The exercise was scheduled to begin on April 18th, 2020, till the end of May.
After the most recent Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, Dr. Serebour Quiacoe, the Director of Electoral Services at the Commission said, “…because of the pandemic, we can’t do it on April 18.”
“A new date for the registration exercise will be announced as soon as the COVID-19 pandemic is under control,” he said.
“We have up to the end of June to compile the new register…the new register is important if only we want to have an election, so without the new register no elections”, he added.
