‘Our first 92 songs flopped’ – Don Jazzy

imagesRenowned Nigerian producer and entrepreneur, Michael Collins Ajereh, more commonly known as Don Jazzy has revealed his music label, Mavin Records, did not immediately capture the world’s attention in its first year of creation.

The label which is home to some of Africa’s fiercest and most promising acts, including Dr.SID, Tiwa Savage, D’Prince, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello and Di’Ja was created as a wholly independent music label on May 8, 2012.

They have produced some successful albums including, D’Princes’ (Frenzy), Tiwa Savage (Once Upon A Time) and Dr Sid (Siduction), according to the company’s records.

The Mavin crew are well noted for wowing their audience and fans with their performances at musical concerts and even corporate events.

But the boss Mavin said the height they have reached did not come easy.

“I just want to give God all the glory and all the praise because, it’s not like I just came and started a new company and then ooo, it’s all over. No.

“The first year was really bad. In the first year, we released about a hundred songs, 92 exactly but the people didn’t want to hear.

“We put out a lot of work but maybe some people didn’t hear it or maybe it was bad or maybe we were not emotionally at the right place and then the music wasn’t right. But then at some point, I think God heard our prayers,” he told Bola Ray and Anita Erskine on the Starr Drive on Starr 103.5FM

Don Jazzy also said he is proud of the brand that they have built collectively and is happy to discover new talents.

“Obviously, our fans are divided into two, and I am just a producer, I’m not an artiste. My brother D’banj, he is more popular than I am. We have all built him to the point where the fans love him,” he said of his one time friend and former partner.

The two who headed the one time groundbreaking record label in Africa, Mo’Hit, with Don Jazzy as CEO and D’Banj – the number one musician on the label, parted ways with each other in 2012 citing irreconcilable differences.

This necessitated the forming of the Mavins.

The now successful group is in Ghana to perform at the fifth edition of the ‘Tigo Ghana Meets Naija’ concert scheduled for 8pm at the International Conference Center on Saturday May 23, 2015.

Standing up against them will be Ghana’s strongest, Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, and Sarkodie.
