Revealed: Accra disaster was caused by ‘man smoking cigarette’

photosThe reckless attitude of a man smoking cigarette caused the Accra flood/explosion disaster which killed an estimated hundred and fifty persons.

The said man, an eye witness told fire officers investigating the incident chose to drop the last piece of the cigarette with fire on its tip into the flood waters which had petrol suspending on it.

“One man said that someone was smoking a cigarette which was then dropped on the fuel that had spilled out from the petrol station…,” BBC’s Sammy Darko reported to the International media firm.

That, the eye witness implied started burning on the surface of the floods and led to the explosion.

The account adds to several reports including one that a lightening might have started the fire and the explosion which also destroyed properties amounting into millions of Ghana cedis.

Another eye witness said the fire started from the Odawna market.

“The spokesperson from the investigators says they have established that there was a spillage from the petrol station which mixed with the floodwaters, it then went into houses and came into contact with cooking fires,” Sammy said further.
