Rocky Dawuni nominated for Best Reggae Album | Grammy Awards
When the world tunes its ears to the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, United States of America on February 15 to know who wins what at this year’s Grammy Awards, a personality who would be keeping his fingers tightly crossed praying for a positive result is the internationally-acclaimed Ghanaian reggae star, Rocky Dawuni.
His Branches Of The Same Tree album has been nominated in the Best Reggae Album category.
It is contending for the coveted award with The Cure by Jah Cure, Accousticalevy by Barrington Levy, Zion Awake by Luciano and Strictly Roots by Morgan Heritage.
With Dawuni’s nomination, he has become the first Ghanaian, African and non-Jamaican to be considered for an award in the category that has constantly been won by Jamaicans.
Previous winners include Black Uhuru, Jimmy Cliff, Steel Pulse, Peter Tosh, Ziggy Marley, Bunny Wailer and Shabba Ranks.
The Grammy Awards are presented annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States to honour artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position.
Assessing his chance to clinch the award, Dawuni told The Mirror that though everyone else in the category was worthy of winning it, he felt he stood a good chance of winning because the impact of his music was not only in the reggae world but within mainstream popular music as well.
Dawuni’s previous albums are The Movement, Crusade, Awakening, Book of Changes and Hymns for the Rebel Soul.
