Popular Dancehall artiste, Samini, has embarked on an exercise to donate a million solar lanterns across the country.
The donation is being carried out through the Samini Light a Million Lives (SLAML) project. The donation of solar lanterns is the star’s charity programme in commemoration of his 10 years in music.
Last week, the first donation was made to the Weija Leprosarium and Help Age Ghana.
Through the SLAML project, the musician hopes that by the end of 2015, he would have provided a million solar lanterns to educational and health institutions, as well as rural and urban poor households across the country.
The lanterns for the Weija Leprosarium were received by Father Francis Campbell. He expressed his gratitude to Samini and his team, and urged them to extend the support to the leprosariums in the Volta and Northern regions.
Father Campbell urged corporate Ghana to work hand in hand with the SLAML project to bring relief to many more lives in the country. The Catholic priest also autographed one of the lanterns to signify his endorsement of the project.
The Weija Leprosarium is a shelter run and managed by Father Campbell for people with leprosy who have been disowned by their families or are stigmatised in their communities.
At Help Age Ghana, Samini said the institution was included in the list of beneficiaries because the elderly always needed the best form of care. He hoped that in the present era of inconsistent power supply, the lanterns would become useful to them.
He called for support from corporate institutions to do more to help the underprivileged in society.
The award-winning artiste revealed that he was planning to stage a big concert in Accra and use the proceeds to support the Light a Million Lives project.
