Sarkodie, Yvonne Nelson et al to hold ‘Dumsor’ vigil

imagesRapper Sarkodie and actress Yvonne Nelson are taking their #dumsormuststop campaign a notch higher with a vigil slated for May 16.

They have written to the police through their lawyers informing them of their plans to hold the vigil and a procession at the University of Ghana, Legon.

Last week Yvonne Nelson granted the BBC an interview in which she said the nation was a paralysis because of the persistent and pervasive power cuts popularly called, ‘dumsor.

She had been tweeting ferociously about the three-year-old power rationing which has progressively worsened.

She said promises by government that the power challenges would be resolved had not materialised because the people are being lied to.

Michael Owusu Addo, popularly called Sarkodie also accused the political leadership of taking the people for granted.

He said he was sure the power challenges will abate next year because of the presidential and parliamentary elections.

Another celebrity, Lydia Forson, wrote an open letter to the president, also expressing her frustrations at the power situation.

The celebrities are moving their campaign against dumsor off social media and onto the streets.

Yvonne Nelson posted on her facebook wall, a letter signed by lawyers Kofi Bentil and Nana Akwasi Awuah, addressed to the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, announcing the vigil.

“The #dumsormuststop vigil is on Saturday 16th May! Join me and other citizens of GHANA 🏽🏽🏽Strictly non-partisan. This is simply a discharge of your civic responsibility to God and country. This is for the many people who have lost their jobs because of dumsor. This is for the many people who have lost their lives because of dumsor. This is for the school children who have to study with lanterns and torches to write exams. This is for the sick people at the hospitals who have to endure dumsor on their sick beds. This is for the many patients who are unable to receive efficient healthcare because of dumsor. This is for you and I and the unborn generation of this great nation,” she wrote.
