…Spotlight : The Talented Professional Teacher…

The believability, veracity, and practicability of the widely held axiom, thus,” teaching is a CALLING has manifested to the core and still manifesting in the life of Mr. Solomon.

For undisclosed but detected reasons, such as monthly allowance, job security, and immediate employment, many high school graduates after successful completion quickly flock into the teaching fraternity in sardines-que fashion. It is, therefore, unsurprising that professional teachers in Ghana overwhelmingly outnumber other public sector workers.

Invariably, teachers in Ghana have always been at the receiving end of public opprobrium and insults for the unrelenting abysmal performance of pupils. There is a wildly held belief, though, erroneous that teachers are connoisseurs of knowledge and shrewd wisdom, hence, academic success of a pupil SOLELY depends on the teacher.

To some extent, teachers are to be blamed as many of them have continually exhibited lackadaisical attitude in the discharge of their occupational duties, which may be attributed to the fact that the profession is not their CALLING. On several occasions, some teachers have brought the noble profession into disrepute.Nevertheless, since one monkey cannot spoil all monkeys, a precious few of Ghanaian teachers have by their conduct, actions and inactions demonstrated that they were born to impart knowledge in the classroom. No wonder, since the institution of the annual teachers award scheme, some, if not, all of them have been deservedly rewarded.

One particular teacher whose industriousness, dedication and commitment to the field has inspired me to scribe this article is Mr. Ahiafor Solomon He prefers to be address with the intimidating sobriquet of “no-nonsense teacher”. He’s a selfless, gifted teacher.

Mr. Solomon is a product Tamale College of Education(TACE), he gained admission to the educational institution in 2015 and completed in 2018. Having successfully passed all his examinations(including the maiden edition of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination(GTLE)), he was attached to Our Lady of R/C Fatima Primary School, Basic School in the Sagnarigu District of the Northern Region to undertake his National Service.

During his period of service to the nation as a national service personnel, Mr. Solomon executed his professional duties to the admiration and awe of the teaching staff, non-teaching staff, the headteacher, and parents. As a jack-of-all-trades,he spent his leisure time repairing sandals of school pupils, gratis. He also took time out of his heavy schedule at weekends fixing broken doors of the various classrooms. Quite recently he stenciled the school emblem on the walls of the school, all in service to the nation and as a mark of gratitude to management of the school.

During the recent GES recruitment exercise,he was posted to a basic school in Busunu in the West Gonja District of the Savannah Region.
