Tips for men dressing for job interview

imagesA simple two-piece, single-breasted or double-breasted suit is a must. If you don’t have one, have a friend lend you one or offer to hire it from him. Ensure that your suit is neat and well ironed.

If there are particles on your suit then buy a lint brush and gently roll over your suit to get them off. Your suit should fit and not tighten you excessively.

Choice of colour

Your suit should be in a conservative colour such as navy colour or a dark colour. Please avoid beige and light brown.

Avoid wearing black if you can as it tends to portray a power struggle between you and your interviewer. If you don’t have a dark suit, then wear your black and ensure that you tone down the severity by wearing  blue shirt.

Shirt

A white shirt or pastel-coloured shirt will never fail you, when unable to find one, a light blue shirt is a good option.

Ensure that your choice of neck tie blends or matches with your suit colour. Please no funny-looking tie, especially those with inscriptions. Do well to avoid them.

Hair care

A short and trimmed hair is always a winner. This is not the time to sporty wave your hair, or have your hair glitter with loads of pomade. Neither do you want to go in there with your hair in an afro style. Also avoid a bad haircut.

Jewelry

Absolutely no earrings, our socio cultural setting does not permit that. No neck chains, bracelets and nose rings.

A simple watch will do and for those married just your wedding band is fine.

Shoes

Your shoes must be dark and conservative. Learn to match your shoes with your belt.

Combine your dark shoes with dark and not white sports socks or multi-coloured socks.

Bag

A simple briefcase or folder to put in your documents is in order. Please no overly large case. This is also not the time to carry a large travelling bag!

Depending on the interview demands, you may need to carry a lot of items. Should that be the case, then a decent large bag with your items can be used.

Personal hygiene

Your fingernails must be trimmed short and neat. Use a deodorant to lend you a pleasant smell or an antiperspirant if you sweat a lot.

You really don’t want the interview panel opening windows and doors as soon as you walk in.

If you have someone you trust, ask to find out if you have any body odour and work on it.

Your face

If you can, a clean shaven look works better than sporting a beard or moustache. Do not display any tattoos you may have acquired as this can put off a panel with a negative opinion of people with tattoos.

Perfume/body splash

These items should be used sparingly. Do not pour on your perfume or cologne, a few dab here and there or a little spray is all you need.

You must do well to avoid any form of casual dressing. That is sure to affect the professional image you are trying hard to project. It can cost you the job!

Next week, we shall examine more fashion tips for our ladies.

Stay blessed
