The Bank of Ghana has launched a universal Quick Response (QR) Code payment solution with HPS, making it the first African country to introduce a universal QR code.
The Universal QR CODE makes it possible for all merchants, service providers, and institutions to receive payments from bank accounts, ezwich accounts, mobile money wallets, or internationally issued visas or MasterCards instantly. Any merchant can have a universal QR CODE like, chop bars, food vendors, barbers, carpenters or masons, musicians, shoeshine boys, khebab or ‘Kofi brokeman’ sellers, market traders, trotros, taxis, churches, mosques, schools, funeral committees, wedding organizers etc. Basically, any business.
Testing the system, the Vice president himself and some of his entourage tried it and it worked perfectly at the Aunty Muni Waakye joint. He did the payment himself and expressed happiness with how it worked.
This is part of the digitization agenda the ruling New Patriotic Party has started executing since they came to power. They started with a digital identification system, paperless systems, and an online passport application.
