Vodafone Icons – Willie evicted!

After only two outings, the Vodafone Icons Mixed Edition music talent television reality show is cruising at fifth speed and perhaps keen followers of the programme, over the last couple of years, have expected nothing less.

In the past, Icons has presented itself strongly as a programme that is carried over the wings of efficient backstage preparation, smart run against a backdrop of pleasant stage design, credible adjudicating team and a most enthusiastic live show recording audience.

All these, this reporter was privileged to observe at last week’s event. Indeed, between the live show and the telecast on various television platforms, there is only little to distinguish the two.

Of course, the sound of the live band is more kicking on stage than on TV but home audiences also have the advantage of seeing the faces of the judges as they pass their comments, which the live audience do not.

By jove, what an enthusiastic live audience! Sometimes, the sheer fervour of their support for particular contestants carry them away, but what else can a full-house audience yelling and urging on 12 contestants with eyes on the brand new Nissan Quashqai prize do?

Last week’s event was given an Afrocentric touch with contestants performing songs from various artistes from the continent including Ghana’s Daughters of Glorious Jesus, Efya, Kojo Antwi and Becca.

Sadly, Willie was shown the exit having found himself on the lowest rungs of the public votes but that is the name of the game and he seemed to have taken the verdict remarkably well as he came on to close the show with a song that may have touched many people including the judges.

Judges, Gena West, M.anifest and Miss Naa have a dreadful job on their hands whenever they have had to save or shove a contestant. Sometimes, one could tell how they feel through the tone of their voices. Poor judges.

This week, it has been learnt from the grapevine that M.anifest is stepping out briefly to meet an engagement outside the country and in his place, who comes but another woman with considerable stage presence, the multi-talented Anita Erskine.

Beyond being a television talk show and live show host, Anita also does well in music and although this may be her maiden appearance as a judge, she certainly comes in with a lot of savvy and swag. This means all the three judges this week will be ladies.

Girl power it is.
