We are losing Ghanaian style of music- Ampadu warns

Veteran highlife musician, Nana Kwame Ampadu has lamented the rate at which Ghana is losing its indigenous form of music.

Touching on the state of the Ghanaian music industry after 58 years of independence, Nana Kwame Ampadu speaking in an interview with Joy News Prime expressed worry that the country is losing its authentic music style to bad and profane music.

“I must be frank and plain, we are losing the touch of the original indigenous style tempo of our music and we are falling down in that direction.”

He added that we hardly hear highlife songs on our radio and TV these days except some of the regional radio networks.

The ‘Oman Bo Adwo’ hit singer explained that he is worried about the lyrics of young musicians.

“Some of them sound very profane; detrimental to the state, and that is my worry. If something is not done about it, in the near future, Ghana is not going to go anywhere when you talk about original Ghanaian music.”

“We use music to educate, entertain, advice, propel and encourage but when you come out with such music (profane music), what do you want the public to achieve?” he quizzed.

The veteran musician compared some of the songs of this era to mosquito bites, saying they can only give you sickness.

He however advised that young musicians go to elders for lucrative words for their lyrics.

“They must sit down, think, go to the elders and come out with something. You don’t just stand up and sing anything because you think they will buy,” he said.

Nana Kwame Ampadu urged the general public to reject profane music and embrace music with good lyrics.
