Of late, it is unclear as to what has actually necessitated the surge in celebrities’ interests for politics.
Former musician Bice Osei Kuffour, popularly known as Obour, is the recent star to show great interest in contesting the Asante Akyem South Parliamentary primaries on the ticket of the ruling party – NPP.
Not quite long ago, actor Mr. John Dumelo contested and won the Ayawaso West Wuogon Parliamentary seat in the NDC’s primaries. This is actually becoming an emerging trend worldwide since celebrities (or former ones) like George Oppong Weah (President Of Liberia) and Desmond Elliot who was an actor and now MP in Nigerian’s Parliament have all entered into politics.
With a specific case study to Ghana’s politics, it could be recalled that some celebrities have equally entered into politics and have in the process reduced and/or damaged their popularity and influence . Some big folks that have faced such problems include Grace Omaboe (Maame Dokono), Kwame Dzokoto (of Edziban fame) and others.
It is unclear what the future holds for the new entrants in Ghana’s political arena as indicated above. Ghanaians will help us to find answers to all these after the 2020 General Elections. Until then, your guess is as good as mine ; we simply wait…
