Young artists to get exposure at BɛnpaaliYoung Filmmakers Festival

imagesYoung filmmakers will have a rare opportunity to showcase their work at the first ever, young filmmakers' festival in Ghana next month.

Dubbed the ɛnpaali Young Filmmakers Festival, the event seeks to create a platform for young – trained or self-taught – between the ages 15 and 30 to exhibit their .

Rebecca Oheneasah Hesse, a director of Firebeads Media, the organizer of the event, said “bɛnpaali (connoting a new dawn in the Builsa Language) is the first festival to target young people in Ghana, and is planned as an annual event that will draw local and global audiences.”

She said the event, which will be inaugurated on May 20, 2015 at the Kaya Energy Bar, Cantonments, is being organized in collaboration, with the Department of Archaeology & Heritage Studies (School of Arts, College of Humanities, University of Ghana), NAFTI and the United States Embassy.

According to Mrs. Hesse, the inaugural Festival that is slated for June 4 -6 this year, “will feature about 20 short films the theme Stories that Matter.”

It will also premiere in Ghana The Black Panthers, a film by Firelight Media of New York City. Firelight's Vice President Loira Limbal will be in Ghana to present the film. Along with Professor Kodzo Gavua of the University of Ghana, Ms. Limbal will also give a keynote presentation on the Festival's theme.

Bɛnpaali is expected to bring together filmmakers from diverse ethnic, gender, sexual, class, and religious backgrounds to shine light on issues that matter to them.

The stories will be told from filmmakers' unique perspectives and will be based on the nuances and themes pervasive in their respective backgrounds.

Through this, Rebecca says, “audiences will gain insights into the experiences, concerns, and activism of youth who comprise Ghana's, and Africa's, largest sector and will assume its leadership. From their voices we may well glean unique approaches for creating/sustaining humane and peaceful communities.”

The festival is set to serve as a forum for the country's young and emerging artists and provide them with a rare opportunity to network, compare notes, learn from each other's experiences, gain new insights and improve their skills.

It will “Connect emerging artists with those that are more seasoned from both Ghana and the United States. Through presentations and in workshops youth will learn and receive coaching from key resource people having expertise in various aspects of the industry,” Rebecca, who is also a lecturer at NAFTI, explained.

Mrs Hesse expressed Firebeads Media's appreciation to Joy FM, the official media partner for playing a role in creating a platform for young filmmakers in the country.
