7 celebrities who have run for political office

imagesLet’s take a look at the various celebrities who have decided to use their fame to run for political office in Ghana.

1. Maame Dokono

Veteran actress Grace Omaboe popularly known as Maame Dokono’s first attempt at becoming a Parliamentary candidate for the Birim North Constituency was in 2000 when she contested on the ticket of the NDC. After failing to win in 2000, she returned in 2008 on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party to contest the Birim North (Eastern Region) parliamentary seat and lost again.

2. Dzifa Gomashie

Dzifa Gomashie, who made her acting debut in 1985 with Talents Theatre Company formed by Kofi Portuphy, is one of Ghana’s talented and experienced actresses.
She didn’t necessarily run for political office, but in 2013, President Mahama appointed her Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, a position she still holds.

3. Seth Kwame Dzokoto

Kwame Dzokoto is widely known for his ‘Edziban’ cooking TV show. The comedian cum actor who was recently banned from advertising alcoholic beverages because of his celebrity status is now pursuing a new career path away from the media. In 2014, he was elected the Deputy Propaganda Secretary of the Tarkwa Nsuem constituency of the National Democratic Congress. In 2016, he was vetted and approved by the governing NDC to contest the parliamentary seat in the Tarkwa Nsuem Constituency.

4. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

The former Joy FM Super Morning Show host, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah won the 2016 parliamentary primaries on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party to contest the seat in 2016 to represent the people of the Ofoase-Ayirebi Constituency in the Eastern Region.

The former Chief Marketing Officer at MTN, George Andah was elected the 2016 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary candidate for the Awutu Senya West constituency in the Central Region.

6. Gifty Osei

Gospel songstress, Gifty Osei publicly declared her intentions to contest the 2016 Awutu Senya West Constituency seat.

In an Instagram post, she stated :

“I’m now ready to pick up my form # MP Making # I have the people of Awutu Senya West Constituency at Heart. For God and Country.”

7. Abeiku Santana

Radio and TV presenter Abeiku Santana, known in private life as Gilbert Aggrey, declared in early 2015 that he was going to contest the Mfantseman parliamentary primaries of the NDC. Unfortunately, he failed to pick up forms to make his bid official.
