Achawa gives thumbs up to pageants

imagesAlthough most beauty contests in Ghana leave in their trails controversies, Ganyobi Achawa, a contestant of Ghana’s Most Beautiful 2014 pageant, believes there are not enough pageants in the country and has called for even more of such events.

According to Achawa, the benefits contestants derive from participating in pageants far outweigh the negative elements associated with them.

Citing the Philippines as an example, Achawa said there are schools and institutions specifically dedicated to training and grooming ladies for beauty pageants, adding that many people had discovered talents they never knew they had until they took part in pageants.

Recounting her experience at the Ghana’s Most Beautiful pageant, Achawa said, “my time as a contestant has boosted my confidence and public speaking skills. Additionally, we were also taken through some very useful exercises which has helped in developing me as a lady.”

She mentioned the numerous foundations and projects, which have been embarked on by contestants of pageants as one example of the benefits society could derive from beauty pageants.

“I am currently embarking on a project to promote made-in-Ghana products and other contestants are also doing other projects as well. I say thumbs up to pageants and I would advise all young ladies who wish to take part in beauty competitions to follow their dreams,” she said.

Achawa admitted that some organisers organised pageants to take advantage of contestants and she advised potential contestants to be wary of such people.

“If you take part in a beauty pageant but realise the activities and goals of the event is not in line with your moral and personal values, you should opt out immediately,” she counselled.

Achawa told Showbiz her foundation, Ganyobi Foundation, and a student group from the Ghana Institute of Journalsim, Keteke Foundation, embarked on a humanitarian trip last Sunday to the Western Region towns of Funko and Ampata to educate the residents on maternal health issues, sanitation, teenage pregnancy among others.

They also presented items such as drinks and stationery to pupils in the communities.
