Ghana gunning for fifth AFCON

With Ghana having won the last of their four African Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles in 1982 and losing in the 2010 and 2015 finals, Ghanaian football fans are hoping that the long wait for the fifth title will come in this year’s edition of AFCON. Ghana find themselves in Group C, which has been dubbed the “Group of death”. It consists of Morocco, Gabon and debutants Comoros. And a group of death it has proved to be for Ghana as an 82nd striker from Sofiane Boufal sank the The Black Eagles to an opening defeat. Ghana can still bounce back, they had some close moments in the game with Joseph Paintsil’s curling shot being saved by the Atlas Lions keeper and captain Andre Ayew also coming close. Besides conceding a goal Ghana showed good defensive work and if they can improve on their attack in the next game, while keeping their defensive prowess, they can see themselves through this group.

The Black Eagles will hope to move on from their opening defeat and 2010 World Cup coach Milovan Rajevac, who is out to win the tournament, will have given the team the impetus to go all the way and summon the spirit of their 2010 World Cup run. The old guard of Andre Ayew and John Mensah in the team can use their experience to motivate the team forward, and with exciting European based players like Kamaldeen Sulemana and Felix Afena-Gyan, Ghana can still rely on their quality to see them through to the knockout stages. There are also the likes of Arsenal player Thomas Party and Mallorca-based Iddrusi Baba in the team who can anchor the midfield going forward in the competition. Exciting 17 year old  Abdul Fatawu Issahaku is also one to look out for as he had a breakthrough year in the Ghananian league. Ghana will have it all to do against a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang led Gabon and a spirited Comoros. With Gabon just edging the Comoros in their encounter, this group is finely poised for some exciting football action.
