Who Is Your Favourite Kumawood Star; Agya Koo, Lilwin, Akobeto or Kwaku Manu?
Some years ago, Kumasi based stars graced our screens to make us very excited with their crafts, hilarious insinuations, comic reliefs, skits, and all the acting gimmicks. They named themselves, “Kumawood” and really took away stress with their movies.
Many have wondered how the name ‘Kumawood’ came by.
Nana Ama McBrown in an interview a while ago with AJ Sarpong revealed that the Twi or Fante speaking film actors and actresses invented the name KUMAWOOD for those actors who are based mostly in Kumasi like Akrobeto, Kwaku Manu, Emelia Brobbey, Agya Koo, Kojo Nkansah Lilwin, Kyeiwaa, Don Little, Apostle Prah, and co.
Whilst the English speaking and mostly Accra-based actors and actresses like John Dumelo, Majid Michel, Yvonne Nelson, Selassie Ibrahim, Princess Shyngle, and the rest tagged themselves GOLLYWOOD or GALLYWOOD. So the idea was just ‘KUMA’ as the short form of “Kumasi” and “WOOD” was borrowed from the normal Hollywood, Nollywood, Bollywood or all the other big film industries worldwide.
For now, some have complained that Kumawood is not as vibrant as it used to be. What should be done to revamp Kumawood?
Who do you think can save Kumawood now? Will it be Agya Koo, Lilwin, Akobeto, or Kwaku Manu?
