Canadian-based Nigerian Feminist Defends Why She Rejected Her Original Name From Her Dad

Naming ceremonies are organized to find permanent identities for our children we bring into this world. The names serve as identities for the kids’ identification till we kiss the world good bye.

For some reasons, most people swear affidavits to have a change of names, ages and other vital parts of their persona because of job security, foreign papers and so on and so forth.

A staunch feminist has explained into details why she opted to change the actual name her biological dad gave to her when she was brought into this world. Making her thoughts known, she took to her Facebook page to pour out her heart.

She wrote;

*** Did you remame yourself?

I did.

I was born Nkechi Cynthia Bianze.

My birth certificate contains Nkechi C. Bianze.

I HATEE the name Cynthia.

A lot of people think it’s cute but I don’t like it.

My paternal grandma gave me my names.

I told her that I don’t like it.

Just before my Primary 6 (First School Leaving Certificate) Exam, I said I wanted all my certificates to contain same names.

Saving grace was that for some odd reasons, Cynthia wasn’t fully spelt on my birth certificate. Just the initial “C”.

So, my grandma and I decided to choose another name that starts with ‘C’ to match the ‘C’ on my birth certificate. We both chose Cheery. I chose Cheery and my grandma approved it.

My grandma’s approval meant a lot to me because I love her a lot. And she was a huge part of my life.

And at the age of 11, I became Nkechi Cheery Bianze.

If your name is Cynthia, please don’t attack me.

I also don’t like the following names:

  1. Endurance
  2. Consolation
  3. Patience
  4. Judas
  5. Monday, Friday, Sunday or any day of the week.
  6. Gregory
  7. Shadrach
  8. Meshach
  9. Abednego
  10. Abraham
  11. Comfort
  12. Any name that depicts sorrow, misery, suffering or endurance.

Don’t ask me why I don’t like these names. I don’t know.

And a few other names. I’ll edit this post when I remember them.

Did you change your name? Why?

Are there some names you don’t like? What are they?

  • Nkechi Bianze ***
